{"id":7984,"date":"2018-06-19T11:32:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T16:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/customwordpresssites.com\/mjb\/?p=7984"},"modified":"2026-02-26T13:42:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T19:42:25","slug":"listening-to-and-praying-with-the-cries-of-the-children-at-the-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/customwordpresssites.com\/mjb\/2018\/06\/19\/listening-to-and-praying-with-the-cries-of-the-children-at-the-border\/","title":{"rendered":"Listening to and praying with the cries of the children at the border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>for the rights of all who are destitute.<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>Speak up and judge fairly;<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>defend the rights of the poor and needy.<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em>-Proverbs 31:8-9<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like everyone else who understands that the Bible is a book that calls us to love without limit, I am heartbroken by the splitting of families happening at the U.S.\/Mexico border.<\/p>\n<p>You probably heard that Attorney General Jeff Sessions misused the Bible to justify the sin of separating families. I am grateful that Stephen Colbert stood up for the Truth of love and justice in response, as you can see in this video.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jeff Sessions Cites The Bible In Separating Children From Parents\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j4KaLkYxMZ8?start=8&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>God&#8217;s law is love. The Bible is all about love; love is the entire New Testament covenant. Christians must be more concerned with love than borders, security or any human-made law.<\/p>\n<p>Love can be painful and demanding. When we really love, we often feel heartbroken. Because my heart has been so heavy about the ways that children in poverty are suffering, I\u00a0wasn&#8217;t sure how to write about it. I doubted I could say anything that wasn&#8217;t already being said. I felt helpless.<\/p>\n<p>But then, once the audio of children crying inside a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/children-separated-from-parents-border-patrol-cbp-trump-immigration-policy?utm_campaign=sprout&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_content=1529351580\">leaked by <em>Propublica<\/em><\/a>, I knew I didn&#8217;t need to say anything new or different. I could share this video with any of you who may not have yet had a chance to listen, and by doing so I could help give voice to the voiceless&#8211;the children trapped at the border. I could let the children speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the video. Please listen. As you do, love the children. Imagine their faces. Please pray for them, for their parents, for those who must work in the facilities, for the people in power who can end all this horror.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Listen to children who\u2019ve just been separated from their parents at the border\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PoncXfYBAVI?start=381&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>When I first listened to the voices (and cried and prayed) I was reminded of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/faith\/2018\/06\/12\/what-we-have-learned-10-years-after-postville-largest-immigration-raid-us-history\">Archbishop Jeckle&#8217;s words at The Summons event in Postville<\/a>, Iowa on May 11, 2018:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em> \u201cI would like to cry, to weep. <\/em><em>And I would like to say we should weep as a form of prayer, as a way to wash our hearts\u2014to soften our hearts.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We must weep, we must soften our hearts; we must offer our broken hearts to God for mending. Crying is an appropriate way to pray in this situation.<\/p>\n<p>Then, with God&#8217;s grace helping us gain some strength, we can get to work. Let&#8217;s learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/6\/11\/17443198\/children-immigrant-families-separated-parents\">the facts about what&#8217;s happening at the border by reading this article<\/a>. Informing our minds is another way to pray.<\/p>\n<p>Then, let&#8217;s donate our dollars and energy to <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2018\/06\/how-you-can-fight-family-separation-at-the-border.html\">organizations offering aid to families separated at the border.\u00a0<\/a>Or, let&#8217;s plan to participate in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/595067234206454\/?notif_t=plan_user_invited&amp;notif_id=1529372782640943\">upcoming protest of the separation of families, such as this one in Chicago<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/familiesbelong.org\/#\">Families Belong Together events near you, as listed here<\/a>. Protest and charity can also be ways to pray.<\/p>\n<p>However we cry, pray and act on behalf of the children and their parents, let us remember that God hears our cries; God is with us and empowering us to remain courageous for justice and peace. Thanks be to God!<\/p>\n<p id=\"23034018\" class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>The righteous cry out, the L<small>ORD<\/small> hears<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>and he rescues them from all their afflictions.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"23034019\" class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>The L<small>ORD<\/small> is close to the brokenhearted,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"poi\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>saves those whose spirit is crushed.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"23034020\" class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>Many are the troubles of the righteous,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"poi\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>but the L<small>ORD<\/small> delivers him from them all.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"23034021\" class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>He watches over all his bones;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"poi\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>not one of them shall be broken.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"23034022\" class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>Evil will slay the wicked;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"poi\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>those who hate the righteous are condemned.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"23034023\" class=\"po\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>The L<small>ORD<\/small> is the redeemer of the souls of his servants;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"poil\" style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>and none are condemned who take refuge in him.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><em><strong>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usccb.org\/bible\/psalms\/34\">Psalm 34:18-23<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"John Foley S.J.
