My experiences and awareness have formed a little fire about inequality to burn within me.<\/p>\n<p>Really, when I pray and think about this issue, much comes to mind. Turning\u00a0away from our sinful, greedy, prideful, violent and selfish tendencies will cause\u00a0us to protect the dignity of all people, no matter what stage of life they are in. Sounds like good Gospel living to me!<\/p>\n<p>2.) <strong>A video<\/strong>, one by <a title=\"Who is Politizane? Indiewire\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/anthony\/who-is-politizane-and-whats-next-for-the-income-inequality-viral-video\" target=\"_blank\">an anonymous filmmaker named &#8220;Z&#8221; or Politizane<\/a>\u00a0that went viral over a year ago:<\/p>\n<p>Although the video focuses on wealth inequality nationally, not\u00a0globally, it still helps\u00a0paint the true picture of how horribly unequal things are&#8211;even in a\u00a0rich and powerful country.\u00a0For a video full of statistics, it&#8217;s definitely\u00a0captivating and informative!<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset videofit\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wealth Inequality in America\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QPKKQnijnsM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3.) <strong>An image<\/strong>, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/search\/pins\/?q=Oxfam%20Brazil%20City\">Oxfam International&#8217;s Pinterest page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 2198px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com\/originals\/f3\/2e\/1e\/f32e1ea9e9a0821a63d88aed8bda1b6e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2198\" height=\"1465\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Credit: Tuca Vieira SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, 2008. The Parais\u00f3polis favela borders the affluent district of Morumbi in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil via Oxfam International&#8217;s Pinterest page<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never been to Brazil, but the stark contrast in this image reminds me of the borders of some poor and rich neighborhoods that I have visited in other parts of the world, including Mexico and South Africa. Those travels help\u00a0me to recognize that the houses on the left side of this picture are actually pretty sturdy and adequate, as they are mostly made of brick and appear to have water and electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the inequality disturbs me. In fact, when I consider how my convictions regarding social justice (and equality for that matter) developed, I think back to the uncomfortable daily drive through a shantytown to a neighborhood of wealth where I stayed in Mexico City when I was a 16-year-old\u00a0exchange student. Something very deep stirred within me then, helping me to\u00a0know that such inequality is\u00a0wrong.<\/p>\n<p>4.) A <strong>story<\/strong>, from my own recent life:<\/p>\n<p>This past Sunday I attended Mass with my parents at their parish in northeast Iowa. A missionary priest with <a title=\"Food for the Poor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.foodforthepoor.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Food for the Poor<\/a>\u00a0was visiting from Haiti and spoke about the current conditions that many people are living under there. I&#8217;ve never been to Haiti but several of my friends, <a title=\"Can anything good come from Haiti?\" href=\"https:\/\/customwordpresssites.com\/mjb\/2011\/03\/15\/can-anything-good-come-from-haiti\/\" target=\"_blank\">including one of the guest bloggers for <em>Messy Jesus Business<\/em><\/a>, have.<\/p>\n<p>I am not naive. I know Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. The poverty there certainly is much worse than anything I have been exposed to in my lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, as I listened to the priest speak about his friends in Haiti, I realized how clueless I actually am. My comfortable American life is way too distant from the Haitian\u00a0experience. I can easily go through my days without thinking about the harsh realities of economic inequality that impact most people.<\/p>\n<p>I thought about all this as I drove back to my community after the home visit and I realized my comfort is combined with bad habits. Despite my concern and intentions, I have been influenced by this culture. I remembered that even during the Mass when I was praying, especially for the <a title=\"4 Years After Earthquake, Many People in Haiti Remain Displaced\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/01\/12\/261723409\/four-years-after-earthquake-many-in-haiti-remain-displaced\" target=\"_blank\">thousands of people in Haiti who are living in tents <\/a>without sanitary water, my mind wandered to material things. My prayer was distracted by admiration for the fashion and clothing of other women in the Church. I started daydreaming about the clothes shopping I might do some day! Even when my heart is sick with the Truth of inequality, petty and materialistic habits creep up and tempt me to further increase inequality!<\/p>\n<p>5.) <strong>A call to action<\/strong> to\u00a0take\u00a0today, to be in solidarity with those who suffer due to inequality:<\/p>\n<p>Each of these opportunities will allow you to make a difference and help advocate for more equality and justice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Oxfam America Take Action Website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oxfamamerica.org\/take-action\/events\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\">Participate in or host an event in conjunction with Oxfam America and World Food Day (which is also today)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Sign up to participate in the <a title=\"4 Liters Challenge\" href=\"https:\/\/4liters.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">4liters Challenge<\/a> in order to unite with more than <a title=\"Hunger Crisis Infographic\" href=\"http:\/\/firstperson.oxfamamerica.org\/2014\/05\/vocabulary-hunger-crises-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">30% of the global population who must survive each day with less than 4 liters of water<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Bread for the World Advocacy Page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bread.org\/ol\/2014\/\" target=\"_blank\">Learn about world hunger and then write a letter to congress advocating for reform<\/a>\u00a0to the U.S. food aid system. Through democratic action we can work to create for a higher standard of living for those who are most oppressed by inequality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Inequality is real and it&#8217;s oppressive. As Pope Francis says, it&#8217;s sinful. Each person on earth has equal worth and we all deserve to live more equal lives.
