\u201cAs a result of Israel\u2019s siege, Gazans\u2019 access to water from all sources, including desalination and external Israeli sources, quickly dropped by <\/em>95 percent<\/a> after October 9. The United Nations estimates that the average Gazan is living on only <\/em>3 liters<\/a> of water per day for all needs\u2014well below the United Nation\u2019s emergency standard of <\/em>15 liters<\/a>. Without energy, all five of Gaza\u2019s wastewater treatment plants and most of its 65 sewage pumping stations were forced to <\/em>shut down<\/a> by mid-November. Some small desalination plants in southern Gaza may be operating at a <\/em>much-reduced<\/a> capacity, but plants in northern Gaza are not functional. As many as 70 percent of Gazans now resort <\/em>to drinking salty and contaminated water<\/a> straight from wells.\u201d – <\/em>The Siege of Gaza\u2019s Water<\/em><\/a>, published by Center for Strategic and International Studies, January 12, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus said to her, \u201cWhoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe woman said to him, <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSir give me this water, <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

so that I may not be thirsty<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

or have to keep coming here to draw water.\u201d (John 4:13-15)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I told him: We shared nothing in common.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not speak to one another.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In practice, we have separated the one God into two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, we entered into an exchange<\/p>\n\n\n\n

over a thirst both physical and spiritual, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

and emerged with an alliance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went ahead of him to announce the living water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jug is set aside leaving others to wonder,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did I offer him a drink?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was only midday, and Jerusalem still a ways off.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it all a ruse? Was he impervious to hunger and thirst?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe he ate at my house that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I left the man I lived with to follow him to his own holy city<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where one day, his dying request for water would be made a mockery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, I have not forgotten the face of those thirsting onto death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now I see these faces again, not too far from where he and I met,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The aquifers long ago polluted, the purification plants destroyed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pipelines shut down<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People drinking filth and brine to quench their thirst,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slowly poison themselves, fall victim to disease and dysentery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the sentence of the exiled, the occupied, the refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I weep salt tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are my children too, even though my name is long forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How my own parents grumbled against Moses, \u201cWhy did you ever make us leave Egypt?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it just to have us die here of thirst <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with our children and our livestock?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And didn\u2019t the Lord answer Moses\u2019 cry of distress?:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the people to drink.\u201d (Exodus 17: 3-6)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would that the Lord struck the stoniness of their hearts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it is this way for those who do not know true hunger and thirst:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always grumbling, seldom listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, so much choice, in what one sees and does not see –<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The images easily passed over, or questioned as contrived. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If we hung today\u2019s emaciated, dehydrated bodies on the crosses of the condemned<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would those watching from a safe distance see your eyes, Lord?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would they finally recognize the kinship and see that we have everything to do with one another?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh that today you would hear his voice!\u201d (Psalm 95:8)  <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And taste the salt in your tears, that your brothers and sisters have been forced to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let water flow from that rock – Living Water<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe love of G*d that has been poured into our hearts.\u201d (Romans 5:5)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, you will know what to say, what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will know what his death means, and his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is standing in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strike the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
