Behind barbed wire\nIn the county jail\nWoman recites poetry;\nDeclares she\u2019ll die.\n\nBodies young, old\nForm lines.\nSummoned to penance, \nKnowing they\u2019ll die.\n\nBodies in lines\nWords in lines\nDust and grime\nAsh to ash\nDust to dust\n\nA friar \nsmudges\nsymbol \ninto brow\nafter brow.\nThe texture: \ntouch, trust.\nWe are \nblackened\nby death.\n\nWe gasp \nin prayer.\nWe sigh \nline breaks.\nWe ache \nas children,\nas symbols \non pages.\nEach \noffering: \npoem, \nprayer, \nbody --\nLiving \nSacrifice.\n\nLove in flesh\nis pierced\nby thorns,\nkilled \non a cross.\nThen and now. \n\nWe deny \nourselves\nSo we don\u2019t\ndeny Him.\nWe remember\nour death.\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
